The recent launching of Ituloy AngSulong — the Philippine SEO Contest 2.0 has attracted a lot of participants. The search engines have already indexed a total of 110,000 pages with the Ituloy AngSulong keyword after just a couple of days the contest was launched! This truly is an amazing feat!

Isulong SEOPH, the first homegrown SEO Contest, has taught both observers and participants of the contest a lot of things. The contest became a training ground for some who were just starting out in the SEO world while it also became a playground for other seasoned pros who just wanted to try out some of their experiments.

One of the lessons taught by the contest was about information security. Several sites owned by the participants of the contest were hacked.

So, I ask you now. Are your Ituloy AngSulong sites secured?

You might say that there is no such thing as a totally secured site. Well that definitely is true but that doesn’t mean that you can minimize the risk of getting a security breach.

A couple of tips come to mind:

Use complex passwords. Do I still have to explain this?

Create backups! You’ll never know when you need them.

Make sure your backups are working. A backup is totally useless if you can’t restore it because it is corrupted.

Patch your web server and database servers. Software vendors issue security patches every now and then to fix some flaws in the software. These patches are released for a reason, patches are useless if you don’t use them. Bear in mind to create backups before applying patches since some patches tend to break a perfectly running system.

Subscribe to security bulletins. Subscribing to bulletins related to the software you use will give you a heads up on what to when an attack breaks out. These bulletins usually provide workarounds while patches are not yet available.

Review files on your site. Just because your sites look/run/sound normally doesn’t mean that you haven’t been hacked. I’ve seen a lot of sites that were hacked into but not defaced. The hackers simply used their website as an online storage facility or a launch pad where they can launch their attacks to other sites.

Review your log files. Log files could help you track down where, when and how a possible attack happened.

Practice secure coding. Enough said (go google this to get additional tips and examples)

Have something else to add? Please feel free to leave a comment.
